Commonly called Hens and Chicks these unique ground cover plants are mat-forming succulents that produce clusters of rosettes. These Sempervivum seeds produce foliages of varying shades of green, gray, and even reddish shades. This low-growing ground cover has parent rosettes that are called the "hens" and the smaller rosettes that grow from the parents are called the "chicks." Sempervivum ground cover plants are grown for the succulent foliage, but it does produce 12 inch flower stalks in the summer with blooms of pink and lavender.
Grow Sempervivum succulent plants in full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. In the South, Sempervivum Hens and Chicks can profit from partial shade. Edelweiss is a favorite wildflower of the Swiss Alps, best suited to growing in a well-drained rock garden, mass ground cover planting, or alpine trough. Leontopodium Alpinum plants form a low clump of silvery grey foliage, bearing clusters of wooly white flowers with small flower heads held in stars of glistening whitish bracts in early summer.
The Edelweiss flower is good for cutting, and it can be used in fresh or dried arrangements. Europeans historically have used the Edelweiss herb as a tea to treat diarrhea and dysentery. Edelweiss herb plants are also used widely as a cosmetic cream to aid healing and control facial wrinkles.
The Edelweiss Leontopodium Alpinum plant is low-growing and makes nice compact border plants. They will sometimes self-seed and come back even stronger the following spring. Best in regions with cool summers. Drought-tolerant once established.

Also known as Spoon Yucca. Dasylirion wheeleri is a moderate to slow-growing evergreen shrub with a single unbranched trunk up to 16 inches thick growing to about 5 feet tall, though often recumbent on the ground. The leaf blade is slender, gray-green, with a toothed margin. The leaves radiate from the center of the plant's apex in all directions (spherical).
The flowering stem grows above the foliage, to a height of 16 feet tall. The stem is topped by a long plume of straw-colored small flowers. The color of the flower determinate the gender of the plant, being mostly white colored for males and purple-pink for females.
It is grown as an ornamental plant, valued in xeriscaping. As it does not tolerate extended frosts, in temperate regions it is usually grown under glass. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
The alcoholic drink sotol, the northern cousin to tequila and mezcal, is made from the fermented inner cores of the desert spoon. It is the state drink of the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Durango, and Coahuila.
It was also used by the natives of the region for food and fiber. Its flower stalk can be used as a fire plow.

Prefers cool growing conditions and does not tolerate drought or hot humid weather. In warmer zones, make sure it gets afternoon shade. Saxifraga care includes trimming back the stems once their flowers fade to neaten the ground cover plants, but no other trimming is needed during the year. Rose Saxifraga will self-seed but not to the point of crowding.

A 2-3 foot perennial with delicate leaves and true blue sky flowers from Mar. to Sept. Native to middle to high elevations, Alaska to southern California. A good garden flower. Showy, every morning it covers itself with 1" blue flowers, hundreds per day. The leaves themselves stay at 18" or so but the flowers arise above making a total arching display 3' or so high. Use in perennial garden, rock garden, or even in a container. In areas where the snow is on the ground until March to June this plant will flower all summer.
Blue Flax was discovered by Meriwether Lewis on the Lewis and Clark Expedition in the late 1700's, thus the name. For zones 3-10.

An outside flowerbed perennial that also makes a great houseplant. Also known as Sea Thrift. Sea has pink flower clusters that resemble little pom-poms. The foliage is grass-like and forms low clumps. Armeria is known as a low-maintenance perennial and is also commonly called Sea Pink.
An excellent cutflower. Attracts bees and butterflies. As an ornamental plant, Sea Thrift has already been used in our gardens for a long time. Because of the habitat requirements, it is well-suitable for rockeries, nature-near gardens, heather gardens or beach gardens. If it feels good, it sows itself and appears in many locations.
Armeria Maritima is tolerant of dry, poor and even salty soils. Armeria Sea Pink grows readily from flower seed, and does well in full sun and well-drained soil. It is very drought tolerant and an excellent choice for rock gardens.

This is a wonderful perennial that can be grown from seeds. This 'Manchu' fern-leaved Corydalis is a hardy perennial that produces blooms of bright yellow. It grows about 10 inches tall and the same in width. It does best in moist, shaded conditions, and where it is happy, it will self-sow, but not in an invasive or troublesome way. Corydalis plants look wonderful growing in a rock garden or up along a rock wall. Fern Leaf Corydalis is semi-evergreen, and has bronze-tinted, fern-like foliage. In the spring, spike-like stems with yellow flowers are produced.
With some patience and care, seed can successfully germinate and produce these lovely shade-loving plants. Begin the seed germination process in late fall or early winter indoors. Start seed in a warm compost, 72F with constant humidity for at least 6 weeks. Placing the starter trays in a plastic bag will help to keep the humidity high.
After the 6 week period, move the tray of Corydalis flower seeds to a protected area outdoors where the temperatures range from 25-39F for an additional 6 week period.
Usually, the germination starts at 39F. Raise temperatures gradually up to 50F until germination is completed. Ferny Corydalis seedlings should be planted out when they are young. They do not transplant well if they are left growing in a pot for a long period.

Lemon Catnip is a subspecies of the common catnip, the attraction to cats is the same. The difference lies, not only in the lemon scent but also the appearance. The plants are a bit smaller than common catnip and the foliage is a soft green rather than gray green. Tastes great in teas and has the same mild sedative effect. Blue blooms in summer attract honeybees.
Growing Lemon Catnip is a wonderful way to bring a lemony scent to your landscape or garden, and it's a reliable plant giving years of pleasure. Start these flower seeds indoors in late winter for transplanting out after frosts have passed.

What a sight to behold! This perennial is easily started with seeds, and it will become a favorite! Also called Mexican Primrose. The silky, soft pink blooms with yellow centers appear all summer long. Evening Primrose is a vigorous plant, and it produces dozens of large, showy 2 1/2 inch saucer-shaped blossoms day and night. The Showy Evening Primrose flower is replaced by long 4-angled capsule which contain numerous flower seeds. The root system is highly rhizomatous and sizable colonies can be formed at some sites. Showy Evening Primrose can spread quickly, and the large colonies can be absolutely breathtaking. It is beautiful in a naturalized setting, but also this is a wonderful plant for the front of the border or in large containers.
10" tall x 18" wide plants are care free plant for most gardens with soft pink blooms. A heat loving plant that thrives in sunny, dry areas along baking south and west facing walls and pavement areas. Spreading rapidly on shallow roots when the hot summer weather arrives, give this beauty plenty of room to grow as it will overrun smaller, less vigorous plants. Preferring unimproved, well-drained soils, this plant requires little extra water once established. Not generally recommended for gardeners living in cold, short season climates.
