Unique and stately, Eryngium Planum, commonly called Sea Holly, has been grown from flower seeds in America since the 1800's. Almost all Eryngium make excellent cut flowers as well as flowers used for drying. The flowers keep their beautiful blue color after drying indoors. Harvest flowers when the entire flower heads and bracts turn blue.
Sea Holly self-sows readily by dropping its flower seeds on the ground, but it is not invasive. If the Sea Holly seeds are started indoors, transplant the seedlings where you want them to grow when they are quite small. The Eryngium plants have taproots, so they won't transplant well once mature. Sea Holly plants attract bees and butterflies, and they are a great plant for a low water garden. Eryngium seeds can be started directly outside in the spring after frost season has passed. Grows about 48" tall, hardy to zone 4.

A classic filler for bouquets. Hare's Ear grows quickly and easily to a beautiful annual for the cutting garden. Bupleurum adapts well to growing in many environments. For cut flowers, it is an excellent choice for filler in bouquets.

This filler flower appearance makes the bupleurum a popular choice by florists for vase arrangements and wedding bouquets. To care for cut bupleurum in a vase, make sure to remove all greenery that will be sitting below the water line. Doing this will remove any additional bacteria that could become part of the water supply. Cut stems under water before placing in a vase and supply them with warm/room temperature water.

Teloxys aristata also called "Sea Foam" or "Zeechium" is a particularly attractive annual plant for lovers of dry bouquets, architects and designers. Indeed, its stems are used for reproducing miniature trees.

Delightful soft salmon color. Gomphrena is an old-fashioned bedding plant that readily establishes from flower seeds and has many positive features. They are well suited for edging around taller plantings and for containers for the porch or deck. Globe Amaranth flowers are a favorite of butterflies, and they also makes a great cut flower. To grow Gomphrena flowers for cutting or dried arrangements, plant closely together to force longer stems. For drying, cut the stems just as the heads are beginning to open and hang the flowers upside down in a warm, dark place to dry. Height 24".

AW91 Ping Pong Scabiosa ( Scabiosa stellata )
A great cutting and dry material plant that is grown for it's unique seedpods. It has glamorous cream and pale blue flowers followed by the most amazing seed heads. It is easy to grow and each plant produces masses of flowers. You can cut the flowers for arrangements but this variety is grown for it's seed heads which can be used fresh or dried. Sometimes called Paper Moons or Star Flowers, the dried seed heads of Ping Pong Scabious are brilliant in everlasting arrangements.
Growing from the base of the plant on long stems, attractive pale blue flowers are followed by translucent papery, cone shaped bracts which accompany the mature seed. They are clustered together to suggest a delicate, lightweight geodesic sphere. An annual plant growing about 30 inches tall.

IP021 Teasel ( Dipsacus sativus )
A very dramatic plant to have in the back border as it can reach a height of 72 inches. Sometimes called Indian Teasel or Fuller's Teasel, it has comb-like flower heads that were used in the wool industry to bring up the nap in woolen cloth. It is also an excellent cut flower for drying. It is widely used in floral arrangements and crafts.
Teasel plants will perform well in sunny areas with well-drained soil. Once established they need very little care and are fairly drought tolerant. Deer do not bother the Fuller's Teasel plant. The Teasel flowers are very popular with bees, birds and hummingbirds who love the flowers and seeds.

Brooms are made from a plant called broomcorn. Broomcorn is a type of sorghum plant. The tassels at the very top of the plant are what broom makers use to make brooms after the seeds have been removed. You can grow broomcorn for livestock feed and make brooms, whiskbrooms and other items from the sturdy seed heads and stalks.
